Our Favorite Dog-Friendly Beaches in Marin County

Skall + Glassman - May 14, 2024

It's starting to feel like summer and what better way to spend a sunny day than at the beach with your pup! Check out this list of some of our favorite dog-friendly beaches in Marin.

KEHOE BEACH

Take a leisurely 1.2-mile roundtrip hike to one of the Bay Area's most secluded, dog-friendly beaches. Nestled deep within the Point Reyes National Seashore, this beach offers stunning views and the opportunity to spot a variety of local wildlife, including whales during their spring and fall migrations, if you're fortunate.

A visit isn't complete without first stopping at the Inverness Park Market to pick up some of the best sandwiches around. Stock up on treats and local cheeses to enjoy a picnic on the beach. While the drive to the trailhead is a bit lengthy, it's well worth the effort.

LIMANTOUR BEACH

If you're seeking a remote beach with easy access, this is the place for you. Located near the mouth of Drakes Estero, this spot offers expansive views of the untouched coastline and miles of sand and surf. It's a must-see for any fan of the Point Reyes National Seashore.

With better protection from the prevailing northwest winds, the waves in Drakes Bay are usually much smaller than those on the west-facing beaches, making it relatively safer for people and dogs to play along the water's edge.

MUIR BEACH

Muir Beach is one of our contenders for Best Beach in Marin. As one of the better-known dog-friendly beaches in Marin County, Muir Beach is a popular spot, especially on weekends.Muir Beach is known for its stunning natural beauty, with rugged cliffs, a picturesque shoreline, and sweeping ocean views. The beach itself is a mix of coarse sand and pebbles, with tide pools to explore at low tide. Muir Beach serves as a gateway to a variety of hiking trails in the area, including the popular Coastal Trail, which offers spectacular views and leads to other scenic destinations like Tennessee Valley and Pirate’s Cove. The beach is accessible via Muir Woods Road, and there is a small parking area available. Parking can be limited, especially on weekends and holidays, so arriving early is recommended.

STINSON BEACH

Stinson Beach in Marin County is a fantastic destination for dog owners, offering a range of features that make it especially appealing for four-legged friends and their humans. The scenic beauty of Stinson Beach, with its stunning coastal views and backdrop of rolling hills are incomparable.

There are off-leash areas, particularly to the north of the main lifeguard tower. This provides ample space for dogs to run, play, and explore freely. The beach is equipped with dog-friendly amenities such as waste bag dispensers and trash bins, making it easy for owners to clean up after their pets. There are water fountains available for dogs, ensuring they stay hydrated during their playtime on the beach. The long stretch of sandy beach provides plenty of room for dogs to run and play without feeling crowded. The wide-open space is perfect for games of fetch and other activities while the waves at Stinson Beach are generally gentle, making it a safe spot for dogs to splash in the water and swim.

There are several large parking lots but you will want to park in the north end of the parking area to be close to the access points for the dog friendly section of the beach.
